At Friends, there is a heavy emphasis on free-play and authentic learning. Throughout the year, students engage in a number of activities such as a field trip to Secor pumpkin farm, a "trip around the world" with parent and grandparent visitors who share about their various cultures and countries of origin, a bi-weekly music class, and yoga and mindfulness. The students begin each morning with a morning meeting- each child has the chance to tell them about what is important to them. This fosters learning by talking and listening, and teaches children skills of paying attention to others, controlling oneself, and taking turns. The morning meeting also includes a circle time with singing, movement and stories in the form of puppet shows, felt board stories and picture books from our very own "Friends Library"- consciously curated based off of the Quaker values of community, simplicity, integrity, stewardship and peace. Parents participate in "Back to School" welcome night at the beginning of the year, a performance by the children along with a celebration afterwards near the winter holiday time, conferences with teachers midway through the year and a special spring event Parents also help with our school garden in the spring, summer and fall.
