Friends' Neighborhood Nursery School

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the child to adult ratio?

A: The class size ranges from 10 children for the two year old class to 12 children for the three and four year old class. Each class has a teacher, an assistant and frequently a Parent who is participating for the day.

Q: How will the Quaker affiliation affect my child?

A: The school is guided by the Quaker ideals of acceptance, compassion, equality, and non-violence. We provide a nurturing environment that encourages growth, respects individual differences and fosters the development of values.

Q: What if my child has difficulty separating from me?

A: We will work with children and parents to help the child feel comfortable in his or her new surroundings. Parents may stay in the classroom if this eases the transition.

Q: Does my child need to be toilet trained to attend school?

A: No. Staff will change diapers when necessary, and support children who are in the process of being toilet trained.

Q: How are children disciplined?

A: Preschool is a place where children can learn respect for one another and work together cooperatively. Children's efforts are supported in these areas through encouragement and praise. We do not use "time-outs", but help children express their feelings and resolve conflicts through talking and thinking of solutions.

Q: Is the school licensed?

A: Yes. FNNS is licensed by the State of New Jersey. We also undergo yearly inspections by the town, county, health and fire officials.

Q: How are holidays celebrated?

A: We present the traditions of a variety of holidays throughout the year, including Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Chinese New Year, and St. Patrick's Day through stories, songs, crafts and foods. Parents are encouraged to share family customs.
